Beginner's Guide To Overcome Writer's Block

If you have ever written on a schedule, you must be familiar with writer’s block. It means you may have lost inspiration, the plot, or your mind all together; you may have disconnected from your story or subject; you may be stuck at the editing stage; you are unable to fill in the odd gaps; you are on the verge of a breakdown; or any other symptom reason hindering you from writing. It’s a very natural process, and should be used productively to do other things that may uplift you and bring back your vision. It's not a one-time thing, it can happen to you over and over again. Sometimes it goes away without trying, other times all the advices fail to work. But it’s always better to be prepared when it knocks your door. Everyone has a way of dealing with it; here are 10 things that work for me.

Reading a book, or your favorite blog, or even your old work, can sometimes break the monotony of your current project.

Music / Podcasts
We have worldwide access to all types of music and podcasts – discovering soulful music or even uplifting podcasts have lately worked in my favor. (Driving while listening to music is my paradise.)

Exercise and Meditate

This is my all time favorite and surefire way of recovering from a writer’s block. 30 minutes (sometimes, it takes as less as 10 minutes) of exercising and meditation, that gets your creative juices flowing. The idea is to get some fresh air and set the heart pumping; this is a shorter alternative to when you are working on a time crunch.

Surround Yourself With Positivity
Interacting with positive and encouraging people not only jump starts your brain but also reminds you of why you chose this path for yourself. It reignites your passion and love for your work. These are those genuine well-wishers who may give constructive criticism on your material; and prompt you to become the best version of you.

Pursue those Hobbies

Bring back those hobbies you once loved. Bring out your paintbrushes, recipe books or whatever your heart desires. Do something creative outside your routine.

Don't Go Cold Turkey On Caffeine
Sometimes a sudden change in lifestyle could lead to a writer’s block. The trick is to gradually cut down and not go cold turkey. Consuming dairy-free tea/ coffee, before writing, has been my lifesaver.

Other Bloggers
I follow many Vlogs and Blogs of people from all walks of life, and inspire from their creativity. Watching my favorite movies or TV shows, also helps. (Warning: You could end up binge watching. Sadly, I don’t have a cure for that.)

On That Note
I take notes on the go – It could be one word, one thought, a photo or just an observation of something. Many times we have all the information we need in these logs.

Time For A Vacation

And if all else fails, take a vacation. (Or a nap! I wish we had nap time in offices to increase productivity) Change in routine, weather and environment helps induce creativity. Also, who doesn’t like a vacation?

Fake Writing
My last trick, as odd as it may sound, is – pretend to have it all together. The trick is to force you into believing that you have accomplished a lot of writing, and start writing. At first, you may see jumbled words or sentences, but if it works you will get a lot done without any hassle.

To avoid an everyday loss of inspiration, I write in isolation a quiet and clean space, a spot with plenty of natural but not harsh light (fresh air, if the weather allows), and use my Calendiary to keep my thoughts organized. However, there is no one-way of dealing with this situation, whatever works for you is good, as long as it assists you in getting back in the game.
